Repairing a garage door from start to finish will take up to two days.
The tools you will need are:
- 4th level
- flat head screwdriver
- easels
- drill
- hammer
- measuring tape
- Phillips screwdriver
Materials
- wooden jambs
Did you collect all the proper tools? It would be handy if you created a checklist for that. Super, now let’s get down to business! Are you ready?
First things first, remove the old door.
Pay extra attention when you remove the old door. It would help if you released the tension of the torsion spring by carefully unhooking the door from the pulley system, disassembling the door panels, and unscrewing the rails.
Ensure you remove one panel at a time. Otherwise, all the panels may fall on you and get you injured.
Step 1: You Have to Measure, Attach Hinges and Handles.
Measure the areas where the door will be installed:
- Height and width of the door opening
- Clearance height (from the top of the opening to the ceiling)
- Backroom (garage length)
For headroom, you should have 10 ‘to 12’ of clearance, depending on your installing spring system. And for the back room, you should have the height of the door plus another 18 ‘or more space.
With the correct measurements in hand, temporarily secure the latches on both sides of the opening and ensure they are flush with the inside edge of the door jamb. Using the trestles, arrange the bottom piece of the new door and attach the gaskets (if necessary).
Also, attach any hinges and lift the handles to the piece.
Step 2: Set in place the bottom piece.
It would be best if you tucked the bottom piece into the door frame. Use a level to set the part correctly.
Once the bottom part is in place, tap the pins halfway into each jamb. Tilt or bend your pins slightly to secure them in place.
Our instructions on how to install a garage door suggest assembling the rail’s vertical, curved, and horizontal pieces and setting them to the side.
Step 3: You Have to Install the Remaining Panels.
Next step, tuck the second panel on top of the first, driving nails into the side jambs to hold it in place. Then move to the hinges, install them too, and repeat the process for as many panels as needed.
You will need to anchor each piece in the door jamb.
Step 4: You Have to Install the Rollers.
Once all sections are secured, install the rollers into the section roll holders. With these in position, place the rollers in the assembled track, securing the track brackets as you go.
Be careful not to press the rollers against the track, as friction can damage the door.
Step 5: You Have to Attach the Rails and Connect the Springs.
Install the curved and horizontal pieces with the vertical rails secured against the jambs. When installing the horizontal pieces, use your previous measurements and level to ensure the rails are straight and point away from the 90-degree opening.
Once the rails are secured, assemble the springs. At this moment, you will need the help of a partner to lift the door about halfway to ensure the rails are level and parallel.
When everything is ready, lift the door in the remaining distance and connect the springs to the pulley system.
